Proud to be Indian

August 11, 2008

I was going through an article today morning on whether we should stand up when the National Anthem was being played. I never liked the concept that it is mandatory to stand up when someone plays the National Anthem. This doesn’t mean that I don’t love my country. After all how many of us stand up and join our hands for prayer each time we pass by a place of worship, but it doesn’t mean that we all don’t believe in Gods, isn’t it?

Standing up when the National Anthem is being played should come from the heart and not made mandatory. I hate it when people stand up in theatres while the National Anthem is being played just because it is mandatory. I feel this as an insult to those who have given their lives or have done us Indians proud.

But it was just around 9:55 AM IST when I switched on “Times Now” channel, just to hear that Abinav Bindra might win the Gold or Silver in 10m air rifle event in Olympic. Just few seconds and the news flashed that he had won the Gold Medal. This was the India’s first ever individual gold at Olympic Games. As an Indian it made me very proud.
Few minutes later the award ceremony of Abhinav Bindra was being flashed with India’s National Anthem being played in the background. I stood up voluntarily in my room. It was not mandatory for me to stand up as no one was watching if I was lying down or standing up. But this time it came from my heart and there were no excuses to not stand up. I was proud to be an Indian.
Thanks Abhinav, people like you make me proud to be an Indian. This medal is a salute to those who have sacrificed their lives to India.

I always liked the idea of standing up to worship the Canadian Flag. It is a sign up respect to the soil I stand on.

Though, it isn't mandatory. Not in North America, at least.
