How to promote your new software application

October 5, 2008

In the competitive world, it is very challenging to software application owners to promote their new brand of software’s. This challenge and fear keeps all the newcomers away from developing new software’s.

In this world where Microsoft has already captured the market with MS Word and MS Excel, it is difficult for Google to capture the market for the similar product even though they are offering it for free? The same goes with the bulletin boards too. I was going through many feedback on which bulletin board should one go for and the result was shocking. People preferred vBulletin instead of PHPbb (which is similar to vBulletin but is freely available).

Upon asking my friends, colleagues and the webmaster of forums, I have jolted down following point, which might be useful for the software developers to promote it. Don’t let this points limit the ways of promoting your application, but a start to thinking in different ways of promoting.

  • Make sure that the application is easy to understand.
  • Get the application tested by the real world user instead of the internal testing, by providing a review copy.
  • Create a name that is easily remembered for your product.Advertise your product as banner in well known portals. Don’t wait for others to notice your products by luck.
  • Create a website with domain name matching the application name to sell your application.
  • Create a video demo of your application, if possible.
  • Make sure that there is no security hole in your application. Don’t let your application be the weakest link with respect to security. People are paying for antivirus and would not like it if their computer gets hacked because of your application.
  • Do not provide affiliate links. This will give your product a wrong image due to spam mails.
  • Provide review copies to few users on forums and get their feedback. Be open for any negative feedback too and improve your application.
  • Give initial discounts. Buyers love bargains and discounts.
  • Don’t release all the updates in one go. Instead release it part by part so that people visit your sites regularly.
  • Offer some hacked copies of your application on the web. People get attracted to hacked application more than a free copy of the same.
  • Offer a support site for your application. Make sure that all queries are answered in time.
  • Treat your customer as King.
  • Final word: Be creative & have patience

Proud to be Indian

August 11, 2008

I was going through an article today morning on whether we should stand up when the National Anthem was being played. I never liked the concept that it is mandatory to stand up when someone plays the National Anthem. This doesn’t mean that I don’t love my country. After all how many of us stand up and join our hands for prayer each time we pass by a place of worship, but it doesn’t mean that we all don’t believe in Gods, isn’t it?

Standing up when the National Anthem is being played should come from the heart and not made mandatory. I hate it when people stand up in theatres while the National Anthem is being played just because it is mandatory. I feel this as an insult to those who have given their lives or have done us Indians proud.

But it was just around 9:55 AM IST when I switched on “Times Now” channel, just to hear that Abinav Bindra might win the Gold or Silver in 10m air rifle event in Olympic. Just few seconds and the news flashed that he had won the Gold Medal. This was the India’s first ever individual gold at Olympic Games. As an Indian it made me very proud.
Few minutes later the award ceremony of Abhinav Bindra was being flashed with India’s National Anthem being played in the background. I stood up voluntarily in my room. It was not mandatory for me to stand up as no one was watching if I was lying down or standing up. But this time it came from my heart and there were no excuses to not stand up. I was proud to be an Indian.
Thanks Abhinav, people like you make me proud to be an Indian. This medal is a salute to those who have sacrificed their lives to India.

These are not the work of terrorist?

July 27, 2008

The serial blasts in Ahmedabad and Bangalore city of India on 25th and 26th July 2008 has left at least 46 people killed and over 150 injured. Is this the work of terrorist?

If you ask me, then no they can't be tagged to "TERRORIST". Terrorist are those persons who intended to create fear or terror in the minds of people. But I don't see any fear in the eyes of people after the blast. Instead I see hatred against those people who kill others. Had there been any fear in the people, then no one would have come out of their home, but instead you find people ignoring the blasts and following their usual routine. They do feel bad about the people who have lost life but not fear.

So what are these criminals aim by killing innocent people? Do they think people will change by this act? Do they think that government will fall to their feet to fulfill their wishes? Nonsense, wake up you criminals. You are not going to get benefited by this. Instead you and your family will have to face the curse of the family members who died in this incident.

I am damn sure that you will not be able to read this as you are uneducated. But hope some one educated in your family reads my blog and tells you about this.
