Save Water

July 8, 2008

Penny saved is penny gained but not all assets should be measured in currency. They’re also valued by the life they give. For e.g. water.

One doesn’t realize how much we take water for granted. There are few sights more disheartening and discouraging than a parched and lifeless landscape. Yet, such a scenario is closer to reality than it may seem. Unless we work together to ensure that we are doing whatever we possibly can.

How we can contribute at an individual level

Watering plants or washing your car

Do you wash your car down with a hose? If you take ten minutes to wash your car, you end up using 400 litres of precious life-giving water. Get a bucket and mug instead. You’ll save 382 litres and probably give you a good workout in the bargain. Same thing works for watering your plants too.

Water for personal use

Leave your tap on while you shave or brush? Running a tap for 5 minutes uses 45 litres. Use a tumbler or a mug; shave/brush from it. You will use uses 0.5 litres, saving 44.5 litres.

Start your shower when you actually need it. Letting the shower run uses 90 litres; turning it on only when you need it uses 20 litres. Imagine the water you’d save if you make this a habit.

So stop being penny-wise, pound-foolish and save our environment.
